Gwinnett County was created by the State Legislature in 1818. The county was named after Button Gwinnett who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Located approximately 30 miles northeast if Atlanta, the land that makes up the county was mostly frontier land that was ceded to the state by the Creek Indians. In addition a portion of the land was originally part of Jackson County which is to the north of Gwinnett.
